If you have tooth decay beyond repair or lose teeth then extraction is a possible solution. Before the extraction, you will be given local anesthesia that will numb the concerned area. After the surgery gets over, you will need to rest. You can expect the extraction site to bleed for a little while after the surgery. Gauze will be applied at the completion of the surgery, and you will need to change it when it becomes soaked. If bleeding continues for longer than 24 hours you should call your dentist.
It is very important to take ample rest when you return home. Place your head on a pillow when you lie down do not sleep flat. Take medicine as prescribed by your dentist so that the sored gums can go away. Applying an ice pack will also help to ease out the pain. You will be limited to soft foods like ice-cream, mashed potatoes, etc. for a few days after your surgery. Do not use any straw to drink. The sucking motion can loosen your sutures and slow the clotting process. Also, remember to avoid smoking.
